ABSTRACT

Modern Times? Work, Professionalism and Citizenship in Teaching is about the past in education and the future. It is an attempt to view, from different angles, aspects of the last seventy years of schoolwork, that is the material and social relations of work in school, through a culture/power lens; exploring curriculum, professionalism and unionism, key words of the time, dynamically, within a perspective which emphasizes a struggle over the control and purpose of work in schools.
