ABSTRACT

The roles of teachers and those who support their efforts have changed profoundly in recent years. In many respects, these changes have not been welcomed, especially in regard to the apparent politicization of the field, including efforts to establish a national or state curriculum, and the attendant uncertainty and changeability as different players have entered the arena. The curriculum has been crowded out, not only with requirements in key learning areas, but also in the way schools have been expected to address all manner of social issue, including driver training, drug education, water safety and a range of matters that may impinge on sexual behaviour and preference.
