ABSTRACT

It is people who do science and the results of scientific endeavour affect people’s lives. The past, the present and the future of science are intimately involved with people: the future of science will be dependent upon our pupils. We may help them to see that they can contribute to that future if we pay attention to the people who developed our scientific knowledge and skills to what they are now. The aims of this chapter are to help student teachers investigate:

• how pupils see science and scientists and to think about what teachers do to promote particular images;

• the contribution a knowledge of the history of science makes to improving science teaching;

• the role of science in society and how can we explore this relationship in the classroom; • the ways in which the ethical issues that are raised by science might be presented and

explored by pupils.
