ABSTRACT

Pupils can make progress through the science curriculum in a number of ways:

• from one topic to another (from respiration to photosynthesis); • from one context to another (from respiration in mammals, through respiration in

insects, to respiration in plants); • in the complexity of the concepts they deal with (from respiration as ‘oxygen plus sugar

produces carbon dioxide and warmth’ to the ‘cellular chemistry of respiration’).
