ABSTRACT
Pastoral care as practised in British schools purports to be the system through which strategies that facilitate the learning, welfare and well-being of pupils are implemented. Its purpose is said to facilitate pupils’ access to educational opportunities available in the curriculum offered (Clemett and Pearce, 1986). As such it encompasses several traditional dimensions of school life including the ethos of the school, personal and social education, vocational guidance, counselling and welfare of pupils and administration. The pastoral curriculum and the academic curriculum form the major provision in schools for the education of all pupils.
