ABSTRACT

In this chapter I outline the major changes in government policy in the UK since the mid 1980s which have led to a particular concern with the quality and standard of teaching and learning in further and higher education.1 Ideas of quality and standards in teaching and learning are explored and you are invited to elaborate your own views. Institutional ethos and student satisfaction measures and their links to the quality of teaching and learning are discussed. The last section of the chapter discusses one particular threat to quality, increased class size. By the end of the chapter you should be able to use your ideas of quality and standards in teaching and learning to evaluate your own courses, institutional arrangements and some quality assurance measures.
