ABSTRACT
Performance assessment, as already explained in earlier chapters, is a term currently in wide use by those who wish to move away from traditional standardized multiple-choice testing. The term is, however, very loosely used. In the USA for example it is commonly taken to mean any form of assessment other than multiple choice. The first task of this chapter then will be to make clear the sense in which the term is used in this book.
