ABSTRACT

Until relatively recently the way into teaching in England and Wales was clearcut. Basically one either took a degree, in a discipline usually, though by no means always, related to the subject one intended to teach, followed by a one year Post Graduate Certificate of Education course, in the same or another university or college (the consecutive model), or one studied for three or four years, usually the latter, engaged on a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree course (the concurrent model), also including the academic study of one or more subjects, normally related to the subjects or age range one intended to teach.
