ABSTRACT
The methods mentioned by John Donne in his anguished quest for true knowledge were, no doubt, quaint and exotic, even in his own day. Today, 300 years or so later, they reek of an unenlightened antiquity. In 300 years from now, perhaps the methods that we have at our disposal will seem equally fanciful, yet we must make do with those that are available.
