ABSTRACT

My initial intention to describe identity as the subjective value produced in a system of symbolic production proved overly abstract-another reification. ‘Symbolic production’ became an aesthetic pleasure of the analyst, paid for by denying the everyday historical context in which the action of becoming somebody takes place.
