ABSTRACT
The period between the decision to enrol and somewhere shortly after the course start is probably the most critical in determining whether a student stays or goes. The evidence for this is largely drawn from an examination of where students appear to leave their courses. For example in a typical UKOU course the numbers of students submitting an assignment can be illustrated in a ‘river’ diagram.
