I have previously defined retrieval as the process of getting a student back on to a course after withdrawal as soon after the event as possible-that is at the stage where the student could pick up the course again before he or she has fallen too far behind. This is important because it seems likely that the longer a student is out of touch with his or her studies the harder it will be to return to them.
