ABSTRACT

This chapter is about moving out from underneath what Eliot1 in The Hollow Men calls the Shadow-the Shadow of stress; of disempowerment; of feeling, and indeed being, unsupported; of wanting change but not having the means to achieve it; of over-work, over-commitment and a lack of balance in our lives; of losing sight of our values and aspirations in the hurly-burly business and detail of everyday professional life. One of the sad ironies I have often noticed about us staff and educational developers as a group is that while we spend our working lives helping other colleagues to grow, develop and move forwards, we often do so at the cost of ignoring our own needs for development, supportive growth and nurture.
