ABSTRACT

The most important thing about a school is its ethos and many very good schools operate in less than perfect buildings. However, it is important that the management, and improvement, of the school buildings are both given due attention. We will look at both structural and staffing issues. It is important throughout this chapter to remember that the purpose of managing school buildings effectively is to contribute to the education of the pupils. This should always be borne in mind when making decisions about expenditure. Some schools involve the pupils to a greater or lesser extent in making at least some spending decisions (or, more accurately, making recommendations to the senior management of the school): this is possible with children of all ages and not just those nearing adulthood.
