ABSTRACT

Learning at work There has been a recurring theme in debates about education over the years. How should schools prepare children for the ‘world of work’? Do they do so effectively? But the fact that schools (and colleges, professional institutes and universities) are designed to educate or train for workamong other things-has tended to obscure another truth. People do not just learn in order to work. They learn at work. For most jobs, workers require some skills from the outset. For some jobs, a lot of prior knowledge is essential. But learning does not stop when you walk through the office or factory door for the first time.
