ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ways in which feedback plays a critical role within elearning environments in terms of participant engagement and the construction of meaning. It emphasizes that the effectiveness of communication between course participants largely depends on the dynamics between learner, computer, other humans, information resources and/or learning objects-all of which contribute to the interactive and collaborative experience. Within this computermediated context therefore, the participant’s interactivity is critical to success, and the means by which feedback is conceptualized, structured and activated by each player within the e-learning environment is the foundation for that interactivity, enabling communication and subsequent engagement.
