ABSTRACT

Tasks, exercises and activities are central to teaching and learning. Some of these tasks are collective and involve a whole class or subgroup, others are individual. Some will take place during the session; others will be for afterwards, in the form of homework or private study. The nature of tasks varies greatly, reflecting the content of the subject, the level of study and the overall aims of the course. Sometimes such tasks will be formally assessed and marked, sometimes not. But their purpose is always the same, which is to engage the student in active learning, to involve him or her in actually doing the subject.
