ABSTRACT

GEORG BRANDES (1842-1927) was a Danish literary historian and critic. His Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature (1872), which traces the infl uence of migrant writers following the French Revolution, is considered a classic in comparative literature studies. He wrote extensively on Scandinavian and European writers alike, including book-length studies of Goethe and Shakespeare. Having lived in Berlin for several years, he continued to be involved with European authors after his return to Copenhagen in 1883, and his correspondence with and lectures on Friedrich Nietzsche are regarded as central elements in the revaluation of the philosopher’s work.
