ABSTRACT
THE GERMAN WRITER JOHANN WOLFGANG (von) Goethe (1749-1832) did not coin the term “world literature” or, in Goethe’s own language, Weltliteratur , though for the longest time he was thought to have done so. Undeniably, though, his use of it gained the term the wide currency it has ever since enjoyed.
