ABSTRACT

There are many barriers to achieving career objectives, some of which are beyond the individual’s control. A school may close, ill health may strike, the school may go through a bad patch that makes it difficult to move, or personal circumstances may prevent one moving to take opportunities for promotion. However, one barrier that you can control is a lack of clarity about what your objectives are. For example, some people talk as if they would like to run a department in a secondary school or be a deputy head in a primary school, but their actions do not bear this out. They do not keep up with current trends through regularly reading leading journals, they do not attend courses, they do not actively examine the current job market; in short, they do not prepare themselves for such a move.
