ABSTRACT

Boundary management (below, Context) is all about responding to and influencing the expectations and demands of the external world, which includes government, parents, employers, the media and a host of other organizations. There is evidence from the schools sampled in this book that strong local community partnerships lead to quality community involvement among the students. There was a time when most schools saw themselves as quite distinct from their local communities. Even parents were required to keep outside the yellow line that was drawn about the school. ‘Fortress schools’ still exist, but they are becoming fewer and in no case are they able effectively to provide real-life experiences of community involvement beyond the classroom.
