ABSTRACT

ALC is an important element on the whole spectrum of active learning techniques. There is not precise universal agreement about the use of terms in association with active and experiential learning. For the purposes of this book the terms are used as follows (see Figure 14.6):

• Active learning: The distinguishing mark of active learning, as its name suggests, is interaction and engagement with other people. As we move from the left to the right of the spectrum these activities engage increasingly with the wider community. On the right of the spectrum learning experiences are based on activities that meet real needs of people in or beyond the classroom. Active learning, as used here, applies to the whole range of teaching and learning strategies that deliberately and systematically engage young people in learning through interacting with others.
