ABSTRACT

Chris Quinn was a volunteer youth worker at the Star Centre and studying part time on a youth leadership course. He had been unemployed since leaving school.

He wanted to improve the drab environment in the Long Streets New Lodge area of North Belfast. The area ranks as one of the most disadvantaged wards in Northern Ireland. More civilians have been killed in this square mile than in any other part of the country during the troubles, The project aimed to improve the concrete ‘gap’ between two housing terraces by creating a multiactive play area including a volleyball, basketball, badminton and football pitch. Chris Quinn, together with his project team, also painted murals on the gable end walls adjoining the play area.
