ABSTRACT

Active citizenship uniquely links learning with the development of healthy communities in and beyond the classroom. Citizenship education, therefore,

is a challenge not only for teachers and pupils but also for all who have a stake in the quality of our democratic way of life. What follows, therefore, is intended primarily for those who are actively involved in leading, implementing and supporting citizenship education in English schools. Headteachers, senior management teams and curriculum advisers are clearly in the front line of providing citizenship education. There are, however, other people including governors, local government officers, employers and people in voluntary sector organizations who have a key role in contributing to the ‘common core of civic education’.3
