ABSTRACT

Deptford Green is a successful inner-city school in New Cross, South London. It has a roll of 672 boys and girls and has recently been given an achievement award. The school has a strong history of community involvement and is now campaigning to be recognized as a ‘specialist school in citizenship’. The Headteacher, Keith Ajegbo, and senior managers have set out a vision for the school’s development over the next few years. He is clear that citizenship education is central to this vision. ‘Citizenship will take different forms in different schools but it requires schools which see it as a central part of their vision to lead the way. We wish to be one of those schools.’ Members of staff are equally clear about their shared vision. The school should be a centre of learning for the whole community. We aim to enable our pupils to take an active part in the regeneration of the local community and we will encourage the community to take an active part in our school.’
