Ricky Wilkinson has given systematic attention to the factors that make for quality learning in his subject. He points out in his paper on good practice in his field that research has identified four critical success factors in teaching and service learning of this kind.44 They are:

• collaboration and problem solving in ‘design and make’ activities; • sustained motivation-including among underachieving boys; • the development of a successful pedagogy; • quality outcomes.
