ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters have provided many detailed analyses of verb sequencing constructions with data mainly from Ed6. These were shown to accurately represent a cross-section of typologically distinct and similar languages. Thus, the basic goals of the book have been the folloWing: (a) provide clear and systematic tests, based on solid empirical evidence, that would distinguish the various kinds of SVCs from one another as well as from other constructions that appear on the surface to be sequences of verbs, and (b) establish and formulate concretely the parameter that allows SVCs in some languages but not others. These goals and the results will be discussed in tum.
