ABSTRACT
Modern Russia, with its population of 145 million in September 2000, is a multi-ethnic state where people belonging to more than 150 ethnic groups speak a wide range of languages. This sociolinguistic situation has a long history behind it, with gains and losses during the periods of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and the current Russian Federation.
