ABSTRACT

This chapter presents material from studies conducted at Vista University in South Africa. This university serves a disadvantaged urban population, many of whom continue to live in informal settlements without modern amenities. The students arrive at their university studies with the absolute minimum of prior experience of electronic technologies. Furthermore, their pre-university education has been focused on rote learning rather than exploratory. The chapter focuses on a cohort of student teachers as they take their first steps towards use of computer based education materials and the quite different approach to learning that this demands.
