ABSTRACT

Minority ethnic mentoring schemes have been established to meet the needs of minority students who face particular disadvantages and barriers to their educational and career progression. In this chapter we begin by discussing the focus and targeting of minority ethnic programmes and their aims and objectives. Three case studies from different parts of inner London illustrate practices in ‘Black’ mentoring programmes targeting primary, secondary and college students. The rather limited research and evaluation evidence on minority ethnic programmes is discussed, together with some issues arising from the case studies. A checklist of good practice points on planning and implementing minority ethnic programmes is then provided. We conclude with the identification of possible future trends in minority ethnic mentoring programmes.
