ABSTRACT

We are defining higher education student mentoring as students from colleges and universities mentoring students in schools. It can be described as a form of cross-age, cross-institutional mentoring, but the distinctive features of these programmes warrant a separate chapter. Mentoring in higher education includes peer mentoring programmes and programmes where academic staff mentor students. These schemes are outside the scope of this book. This chapter focuses on programmes where college and university students mentor school students. These schemes are increasingly popular as a form of voluntary service, community service learning or citizenship education. They also enable higher education institutions to build links with local schools, and to encourage widening participation, that is, progression into higher education from under-represented groups.
