ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss some of the issues involved in planning and managing mentoring programmes for students and young people. It begins by giving an overview, breaking down a standard programme into its constituent elements. These elements form the substance of Chapters 11-13, which focus on mentors, mentoring processes and evaluation. This chapter identifies some of the first steps that need to be taken when setting up a new programme. These include especially identifying the needs of the target group. There is a discussion about the supporting documentation that needs to be produced. The chapter highlights one important aspect of project management, namely the clarification of roles and responsibilities between the programme manager and the school coordinator. It also identifies the main resource needs associated with mentoring programmes and provides a sample budget. This is followed by a discussion of a whole-school approach to mentoring and a case study example of a UK school that is developing a mentoring culture. The next section examines the need for leadership in running successful mentoring programmes. We conclude with a summary of good practice points and speculation about future trends in management of mentoring programmes.
