ABSTRACT

Creating an effective school is very much like travelling on a long journey. When Christopher Columbus set off on his epic voyage, he didn’t really know where he was going; when he arrived, he didn’t really know where he was; and when he returned home he wasn’t all that clear just exactly where he had been. Schools can’t function like that because children deserve success as soon as they enter their first classroom and this success needs to continue. This means that schools do need to know where they are going, what they are aiming for, and when they have completed one part of the process successfully they need to understand what they did and how they did it so that the success can be repeated.
