ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an introduction to what the Internet is, a guide on how to explore it and a few suggestions about how to use it in the context of primary teaching. It also offers suggestions of e-mail, which can be a vital means of communication across the planet, but can also be an excellent way of communicating with colleagues and pupils on a one-to-one basis. Video conferencing is a rather more complex form of communication via the Internet. Basically, anyone with an Internet connection can have a web site. Many schools and teachers will be concerned with providing decent access to the World Wide Web. They will want to make sure that the time they spend online is used efficiently and that children are protected from undesirable material. Many Internet services can be used off-line, without actually being linked up to the net.
