ABSTRACT

ICT is an excellent tool to support children with Special Educational Needs. It can give them access to an appropriate curriculum. Individual children need individual educational programmes, different support systems and activities, and access to different hardware and software. All of this needs are to be managed by the individual class teacher, perhaps in consultation with senior management, and people in roles such as the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and the IT coordinator. A lack of knowledge about what is achievable in such cases is perhaps the greatest obstacle to getting the very best out of what is available. This chapter discusses what is possible and how to exploit its potential. A great deal can be achieved in adapting teachers’ computer to fit the needs of pupils with special requirements. Often such changes can be achieved very simply, and sometimes simple and relatively cheap pieces of software can make a considerable difference.
