ABSTRACT

The case studies outlined in the previous chapter offer a variety of perspectives on the organization and purposes of professional development. This chapter seeks to bring together various strands explored in the case studies and in earlier chapters in order to propose possible strategies and a framework for achieving more coherent and workable professional development policies and practices in schools and colleges. Both survey and case study evidence highlight three particular aspects of continuing professional development:

the nature of the learning process;

the organization of CPD activities; and

the assimilation of development and training activities into individual, group, and institutional practice.
