ABSTRACT
Despite the fact that essay writing counts significantly in the assessment of learners (both in exams and continuous assessment schemes), learners are often left to pick up the necessary skills by trial and error. They can be helped to deliver better essays by spending a little time working out where the ‘goalposts’ are.
