ABSTRACT

Giving verbal feedback to learners has both advantages and disadvantages over giving them written feedback. Below we present some ideas to help learners gain maximum benefit from verbal feedback.

1 It is useful to bear in mind that learners may feel quite tense when receiving verbal feedback from tutors. They may see tutors as both experts and figures of authority. The additional tension this can create can cause them to receive feedback in a somewhat distorted way, extrapolating beyond reason both the actual words and the manner in which you give them feedback.
