ABSTRACT

Brachiopod assemblages in Western Bulgaria are suitable for the biostratigraphic subdivision of the Middle Triassic. Five brachiopod zones and two subzones are proposed which are correlated with ammonoid, conodont and foraminiferal zonal standards. The Anisian brachiopod assemblages are widely distributed in Bulgaria as well as elsewhere in Europe and provide a good base for local and regional correlation. However, the Ladinian brachiopod assemblages are geographically restricted and isolated from one another, which makes biostratigraphic correlation difficult.
