ABSTRACT

An ergonomic approach can be adopted in virtually any kind of design or purchasing project. Such an approach merely requires the systematic application of ergonomic principles. The person providing the ergonomic input to the project, whom we will refer to as the ‘ergonomist’, must work systematically, and wherever necessary should call upon other specialists. In this chapter we present an appropriate general methodology for such an approach, which might be applicable to the following types of project:

• selecting a commercially available product for purchase; • improving an existing product or system; • designing a new product or system; • adapting an individual workplace; • refurbishing a business or workplace, for instance, after automa-

tion; • designing a complete plant.
