To which I will answer with this statement made by a Roumanian peasant at a public meeting in 1848: ‘Why do the gentlemen say it was not slavery, for we know it to have been slavery, this sorrow that we have sorrowed.’ Yes, we know it, and this science of oppression cannot be taken away from us (Monique Wittig, 1992, p. 31).
