ABSTRACT

From millions of environmental cues each man develops standards for his behavior. Jonathan, a 41-year-old community organizer (Caucasian), acquired the male message ‘be the best you can’ from his parents:

I think the example was that my parents were both very demanding of each other. So it was a two-sided message. It was coming, one, from their example; two, from everything they said. If there’s any one consistent message we always got it was that you’re good and capable and intelligent and should be everything you possibly can.
