ABSTRACT

Yāqūt refers to a group of in Abyan called Birāsh al-Shīn. This name seems to be preserved in Jabal Barash. Similarly, his in Abyan coincides with the Jabal and Wādī .

Al-Hamdānī refers to Jabal which was north of the Wādī , i.e. west of Aden. This may be the Jabal or Kharaz, due north of Khawr , and rising to 2766 ft. It is marked on the 1839 map by Haines and the 1930 War Office map. However, it is not north but west of Wādī . The only other name approximating to this is Jabal Kharaz or which Haines locates far to the east, immediately north of Shuqrā’104 where Miles and Munzinger also record a stronghold called “Dar-el-Harz”. Of the two, that north of Khawr , to the west of Aden, seems the more plausible identification.
