ABSTRACT

The pottery and glass production of the Aden and Abyan areas is not fully understood at present. Various surface collections of pottery and glass have been undertaken in the past164 and more recently, significant studies on pottery production in Yemen have been conducted in the course of the Royal Ontario Museum archaeological project in Zabīd on the Yemen Tihāma. A detailed ceramic typology for Zabīd has been established, supported by archaeometric studies, and major trends in the ceramic production have been identified165. The typology established for Zabīd has proven to be applicable in the Aden area as well; a strong similarity in terms of wares and decorative techniques has been observed, comparing the pottery from the Zabīd area with the pottery from Kawd am-Saylā’, north of Aden, although major differences have been identified in the composition of the clay166.
