ABSTRACT

Voice and Power, ed. R.J.Hayward & I.M.Lewis (ALC Supplement 3, 1996): 257-268.

While Somali poetry is relatively well known largely thanks to Andrzejewski, poetry is still little known and after the pioneer publications by Reinisch (1886-8), Hayward and Maknun (1981), Bliese (1982-83; cf. also Parker 1971 and Savard 1965) we finally have a masterly edition of a long poetic ritual text by Morin (1991), and the remarks advanced here are almost entirely based on this work.
