ABSTRACT

The grammar and the intonation interact at clause level, where the most common situation is to have the boundaries of tone-group and clause coinciding, one-to-one. This situation is slightly more pronounced in the narrative text under study than in the dialogue, but in each case more than half the tone-groups and clauses are matched one-to-one, irrespective of length, e.g.:

103. Nikakaa]II akasema]II akampigia dokta, yule dokta Omari simu] kumwulizia] II kwamba nipelekwe saa ngapi kule thiata.] II

(N46-49) 'So I waited and she said-she phoned doctor er Omari up to ask him what time I should be sent to the theatre.'
