ABSTRACT
Accentuation All Swahili words have as part of their phonological structure the feature accent. The accentual place in the Swahili word is the penultimate syllable: exceptions to this are provided by:
(a) loanwords. Of loanwords from Arabic, of which there are a great many in Swahili, the great bulk now conform to the Swahili accentual pattern. Some non-conforming items remain. In these texts we have lazima. zaidi. Of English loanwords rather more are still eccentric in accent; ambyulensi, operesheni, thiata, eponzi (aprons) (this also occurs as ep6nzi), KiUj (=Cliff), and also Galanos (Gk.). These two last are the names of hospital wards named after benefactors of the hospital.
