ABSTRACT
Banna Kanute, who is now (1973) probably in his late forties, was born in The Gambia and was raised in the Georgetown area. He is one of three brothers who are all established griots at the present time. Banna is a younger brother of Dembo Kanute, an example of whose work is included in this book. Banna was trained by his older brother, under the supervision of their father. The Kanutes are the only family in The Gambia who play the xylophone.
