ABSTRACT
Until the upheaval in 1977, Israeli elections were always regarded as a foregone conclusion. Only after the Likud broke the stalemate and assumed the reins of power did people realize that things could be different, and that they could go either way. This new situation found its clearest expression in the changing fortunes of the two major parties during the election campaign for the tenth Knesset four years later.
