ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine peacekeeping generally, comparing the Cold War and postCold War periods, considering what, if anything has changed between these two periods. The chapter begins with an overview of peacekeeping operations, from the earliest identified operations up to the present day. We proceed then to consider how interpretations of peacekeeping have been changing, looking at both traditional peacekeeping operations and the growth in ‘robust’ operations, as well as the employment of multi-component missions. Again, an examination of the changing role of the superpowers in the UN Security Council provides a further basis for understanding how and in what ways peacekeeping has been seen as changing.
